Use of Library Materials
Books may be taken out as long as they do not belong in the Reference
or Reserve sections of the library. On some occasions, a reference book
may be checked out under the discretion of the librarian. Normal loan
periods are two weeks for students. If the book is needed longer, the
student needs to notify the librarian, who will then extend the loan for
an additional two weeks.
If a student loses a book, payment for a replacement will be required.
Periodical’s may not be taken from the library at all. A copy
machine is on the premises to photocopy materials needed from journals.
The costs per copy is five cents (0.05).
Video’s may only be viewed within the library by students. THEY
DO NOT CIRCULATE! Instructors may take them to the classroom for classroom
use.
Reserve Materials: Reserve Materials are restricted
to library use only. They may not leave premises.
Interlibrary Loan
Materials not available in the library can be ordered through inter-library
loan service by the librarian. A complete citation must be provided to
the librarian for requests to be processed.
The Library is a member of DEVIC, a consortium of college and special
libraries in the Delaware Valley. As a member, participants provide free
photocopied articles and loan books on a voluntary basis without charge.
The library is also a signatory to the Inter-library Loan Code of the
State Library of Pennsylvania, and thus is eligible to borrow materials
from any public library in the state.
The Library is a participant in the Regional Medical Library Network,
Region I under the aegis of the National Medical Library.
The library has purchased full text capability through an arrangement
with OVID Technologies. This will allow students, faculty and hospital
employees to search CINAHL and Medline and get full text articles for
papers and research projects.
Computer Search Services
The Library has access to the World Wide Web. CINAHL and MEDLINE are
available online under OVID, which is a full text base provider of journal
articles that we subscribe to. There are log on and pass words needed.
See the librarian for training and questions on usage. Any work done on
the computer should be saved to a disk and not to the computer hard drive.
We cannot guarantee the safety, security or privacy of work saved onto
the hard drive. Loading software from Internet sources or disks is prohibited
due to copyright laws.
Reference Services
The Library provides comprehensive reference services to students. The
librarian will help you plan search strategies, implement them and see
your research through to to end.
Collection Development
The librarian has set up an approval plan in which a vendor sends a
number of books for preview. The librarian invites both faculty and student
input on what they feel might be helpful to purchase to enhance our program.
Audio Visual Services
Audio visual equipment (Projectors, overhead transparency
projectors, LCD Projectors and several slide projectors). Video’s
may be borrowed for viewing within the library only,
THEY DO NOT LEAVE THE PREMISES.
Computer Services
The computer lab is located in the library. Currently there are 13 computers
with printing capability through two laser printers, available
for Internet research, OVID searching and many of the Microsoft software
packages, such as, Word, Power Point, Microsoft Access and Excel, as well
as a scanner. These facilities are available to all students and faculty
of the School of Nursing.
Simulated Nursing Laboratory
The Nursing Laboratory is located on the 3rd floor and houses practice
equipment which students can utilize as they learn to perform nursing
skills. We also have the Laderal SimMan simulation model. The laboratory is used for skills classes. If someone needs help
with skills, arrangements can be made with the senior library aides. Any
student who is having difficulty performing nursing skills should make
an appointment through the librarian to arrange help with library aides
as soon as possible. Contact Kelly Straub, our simulation coordinator, to make an appointment for help and practice also.
